CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) for Children - "A Powerful Voice In a Child's Life"
What does a CASA do? 1) They serve as an officer of the court and acts as eyes and ears of the judge.
2) Gathers information to assist the judge in making informed decisions. 3) Provides emotional support and advocates in court for the child's best interests. 4) Ensures the child receives needed services and feels safe, comfortable, and secure.
Why do these vulnerable children need a CASA? 1) The overburdened child welfare system is challenged to pay close attention to the many special needs of each child. The CASA's sole focus is the unique needs of his/her assigned child. 2) Social Workers are assigned many children; CASAs typically are assigned only one. 3) A child may wait months or years for placement in a safe, permanent family, and have multiple foster homes and social workers. Our goal is to ensure that the same CASA remains with the child for the entire time. For more information, please visit their website at www.casaqackent.org.

MINDING OUR MEDS (Safe Storage & Disposal IS EVERYONE'S JOB)
(Rx Drug Round-up)

Do you know what medications are in your home and how many are in each container? Are they all in one place? Are some no longer in use but you are unsure how to safely dispose of them? Are they easily accessible to children, pets, or visitors in your home?
It's enough to make y ou reach for the aspirin when you realize how medications we take are safe as prescribed but can be dangerous in the wrong hands or when stored under improper conditions. The following guidelines issued by the National Council on Patient Information and Education answers questions on safe storage followed by the National Office on Drug Control Policy's guidelines on disposal.
SAFE STORAGE:
GET ORGANIZED: Collect all the meds in your home and MAKE A WRITTEN INVENTORY of what you have on hand and keep in a convenient place. You could break this down by family member, recording the prescription name, dosage, prescription number, date filled and the expiration date.
STORE IN A CONVENIENT AREA THAT IS COOL AND DRY - heat and humidity damage medicine. Eardrops and eyedrops should never be shared and should be discarded once the need to use them has passed as they may be a breeding ground for bacteria or fungus.
LOCK MEDICATIONS IN A DRAWER OR CABINET - if there are children around or many people coming through your home (for example, if your house is for sale), especially controlled substances such as ocycodone, hydrocodone, or alprasolam.
KEEP MEDICINE IN THE ORIGINAL BOTTLE - the amber color protects it from light damage. Discard any cotton packaging upon opening as it absorbs moisture.
SAFE DISPOSAL:
COMMUNITY TAKE BACK
or Hazardous Waste programs are the preferred method of disposal. THE KENT COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE ACCEPTS MEDICATIONS DURING BUSINESS HOURS MONDAY - FRIDAY. This ensures medicines are kept out of the drug trade and assure environmentally sound disposal.
IF THERE IS NO PROGRAM IN YOUR AREA, FOLLOW THESE STEPS:
REMOVE MEDICINE FROM THE ORIGINAL CONTAINER.
Conceal or remove personal information-including Rx number, from empty containers using black permanent marker or duct tape or by scratching it off.
MIX WITH A MESSY SUBSTANCE such as used coffee grounds or kitty litter, place in a nondescript container with a lid or sealable bag with empty prescription bottles and discard in the trash.
